Even if you don't know who won the women's and men's finals at the Australian, US, French, or English Tennis Opens, you can be certain that the victors needed three things - hunger, skills, and luck. Each of these play their part, and all three are required if success is to be achieved.
Hunger is a must-have quality. Some players, of course, are hungrier than others; even the top seeds needing to maintain their hunger to have any hope of victory. A highly skillful player can make a skillful opponent look second-rate. And the luck of the draw can never be ignored. Imagine, for instance, having to meet to meet Djokovic or Williams in earlier rounds.
The tournament that we participate in is called L-I-F-E in which living longer, better is the name of the game. And this quest has been around long before tennis was first served-up to us back in the 12th Century. So, if there's an Aussie-Open takeaway, assuming that I want to add years to my life and life to my years, I'll need to retain my hunger, improve my life-skills, and hope a bit of luck comes my way.
The good news is that we know what to do, we just have to do it! The ball is in our court (sorry about that). One thing for certain is that, if we're waiting and hoping for someone else to act in our interests, we'll die waiting.
So, consider doing these things
Maintain your hunger by:
Making sure you always have something to look forward to;
Remaining active thereby preventing the onset of rust; and
Getting your attitude, right. As Vince Lombardi observed, 'Life's battles don't always go to the stronger or faster man. But sooner or later the man who wins, is the man who thinks he can'.
Develop your skills, by:
Focussing on the 5Fs - Fitness, Food, Friendships, Future, and Finances;
Using the acronym DIET to remind you of the need to stay focussed on the 5Fs (Do I Eat That, Do I Exercise Today, etc.); and
Stopping using words that place limits on your achievement ('should', for example).
Increase your luck, by:
Being ready to grasp an opportunity when it appears. As Walter Bortz (Dare to Be 100) said, 'No drug in current or prospective use holds as much promise for sustained health as a lifetime program of physical exercise and proper nutrition';
Associating with positive people; and
Taking your own advice.
Groucho Marx reckoned that growing old is something we do if we're lucky. Hunger and skills can help to increase that luck.
